Metro as a Medium: A Study on the Metro Urban Cultural Transmission in Guiyang

Zuozhou Yao, Zhenzhen Zhang

Abstract

Metro is an important means of transportation in a city, which plays an irreplaceable role in citizens' activities and urban life. According to Marshall McLuhan, as an extension of human foot, metro is actually a “medium” of communication. Therefore, metro no longer exists only as a means of transportation, but also as a “medium” for spreading urban culture and building city’s image. Taking Guiyang Metro Line 1 and Line 2 for example, this paper proposes feasible optimization strategies by analyzing the current situation and shortcomings of the metro cultural transmission in Guiyang.
