Application of Bottom-up Processing Model in Children’s English Vocabulary Teaching

Xiaoling Feng

Abstract

As a communication tool, language mainly includes three aspects: Phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary is the basic unit of language, which makes language meaningful. If learners do not master enough vocabulary, it will affect their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. As British linguist D.A. Wilkins said:”Without grammar very little can be convoyed, without vocabulary nothing can be convoyed.” Therefore, we can see the importance of vocabulary teaching. At the same time,we also need to pay attention to the knowledge level of teaching object(students). For old students who have a certain knowledge reserve, and the teaching methods are relatively fl exible. However for those who are young and have little vocabulary, we should adopt the progressive teaching method to stimulate their interest, which coincides with the theory of bottom-up processing model.
