Bio Statement  

Dr. Elizabeth Levine Brown (PhD, University of Pittsburgh; MA, Washington College; MAT, American University & BA, Colgate University) is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. She affiliates primarily with the Human Development and Family Science and Elementary Education programs. Dr. Brown’s research focuses on developmental and psychosocial influences on learning for marginalized children across PreK-12 schooling. Specifically, her agenda investigates this research paradigm across two units of analysis, the teacher and the student to understand how teachers’ emotions and well-being inform developmental and academic outcomes for diverse, low-income children. Dr. Brown has expertise in conducting mixed methods designs, and participates on several research teams with local and national colleagues.

Dr. Brown is a certified K-6 educator and an alumnus of Teach for America. She taught in public schools for five years in the Washington DC and rural Maryland areas. Dr. Brown currently supervises teacher candidates who participate in George Mason’s Professional Development School (PDS) program and works closely with school sites to facilitate desired professional developments to school staff. Dr. Brown has strong expertise in applied research partnerships working closely with public schools, preschool programs and policy agencies. bolster strong school-university relationships for all sites recruited for the study. Her applied scholarship has been published in top tier journals such as Journal of Early Adolescence, Journal of Teacher Education, Journal of Children and Poverty and Advances in School Mental Health and resulted in intervention applications in two public districts.
