Rethinking the Perceptions of Kowloon Walled City: Exploring the Lived Experiences of Residents

Zimeng Wang

Abstract

Kowloon Walled City, a densely populated and largely ungoverned area of Hong Kong , is often perceived as a dangerous and threatening place due to its rampant criminal activity, poor living conditions, and lack of government control. While criminal activity and poor living conditions were prevalent, it is essential to recognise the diversity of experiences within the city. Residents’ narratives provide valuable insights into the complexities of life in Kowloon Walled City, both past and present. To fully understand its impact on Hong Kong’s identity, further research should explore the historical discourses, political and cultural meanings, and postcolonial debates surrounding the city.
