A Survey of Extended Techniques Encountered in Contemporary Artmusic for Choir

Yushan Wu

Abstract

Music is a vital part of human social life. Victor Hugo, the great French writer, once said, “there are three keys to the Treasury of human wisdom. One is mathematics, the other is literature, and the other is music. “And choral art includes literature and music. The historical source of chorus can be traced back to the ancient Greek drama period and has been developed to the present day. For modern music, the music genre was divided at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Creating and exploring modern music works has also become a passion for modern musicians.
To present this series of modern music works, there are many relevant factors worth discussing, including social development factors and the rise of technology to create modern music works. The primary purpose of this literature review is to explore the extension techniques encountered by contemporary choirs in modern music works, that is, composers use some special techniques that are not found in the past choral works in creating works.[1]
In this literature review, we will first elaborate on the understanding of contemporary chorus music works. Then analyse in detail the extended technique created by the composer in these choral works.
The scope of this literature review is limited. The creation of contemporary chorus music may still be generating extended skills. Here, it is only points out that some representative emerging skills exist in chorus works, but it does not represent all the works of modern music.
