The Shaping Process of Supervisors’ Mentoring Style on Master’s Degree Students’ Research Ability--Analysis Based on the Theoretical Model of Situational Leadership

Abstract


As the scale of postgraduate education continues to expand, the issue of education quality is also receiving increasing attention, and mentors play a crucial role in the process of postgraduate training. This paper starts from the theoretical model of situational leadership, from constructing an interactive analytical framework of mentoring style and master’s students’ scientific research ability development, and consequently forms four ideal types of mentoring styles, such as instructive, persuasive, participative and empowering. The development of master’s students’ research ability is a dynamic adjustment process involving the interaction between mentors and students. Mentors need to improve their leadership and change their mentoring styles according to the growth and needs of their students, and students need to cultivate the habit of independent learning to improve their research ability.
