Literature Review on Felix Mendelssohn’s Art Songs

Chuang Zou

Abstract

Composer Mendelssohn disdained the unwavering pursuit of medieval tendencies among some German and European musicians during the Romantic period. Analyzing his works across genres and themes reveals that while respecting tradition, he adhered to classical standards of harmony, rigor, elegance, and freshness in creation. Yet, the unique social culture and living environment of the Romantic era in Europe also profoundly influenced his musical creation.
