Memories of Ethnic Groups: Dance Continuity: A Study on the Vocabulary of Manchu Dance Works
Abstract
This article examines the evolution of Manchu dance vocabulary through a dialectical lens, tracing its transformation from “cultural representation” to “contemporary reconstruction” to explore how ethnic collective memory is preserved through physical expression. The study reveals that while Manchu dance initially replicated traditional elements like mythological themes, costumes, shamanic rituals, and ceremonial practices, it has now shifted toward contemporary reinterpretation. By adopting the “Two Innovations” strategy—combining creative adaptation with cultural preservation—the art form prioritizes symbolic meaning, achieving innovative revitalization of traditional culture. This evolution ensures the enduring legacy of Manchu cultural “language” through modern dance practices.
