Research on Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Register Theory

Wenjie Ma

Abstract

From Halliday’s register theory, this study explores the internal mechanism and practical strategies of subtitle translation. The theory, emphasizing language-context bonds, offers key theoretical guidance for it. By analyzing the application of discourse field, tenor and mode in subtitle translation, the study reveals register factors’ significant impact on translation accuracy and audience acceptance. It also proposes relevant strategies to improve translation quality and promote cross-cultural communication, aiming to achieve subtitle translation equivalence and effectiveness, which is significant for advancing its theoretical research and practical development.
