An Exploration of the Dilemmas and Pathways for Cultivating Philosophical Discerning Abilities in Universities’ Ideological and Political Education Courses: A Case Study of the "Fundamentals of Marxism" Course

Abstract


In an information overload era, we must develop philosophical discernment (faculty to investigate complex phenomena, to differentiate validity in arguments, and to judge according to philosophical paradigms) in college students. Being a central course of IPE, FOM has an almost exclusive capacity to develop this capacity but encounters teaching challenges (high theory/ low reality). The paper presents 15 observations of a classroom at 3 Chinese universities in FOM courses, and 40 interviews with students to outline the essence of philosophical discernment, explore the compatibility of FOM with its development, evaluate teaching dilemma, and suggestions.
