Vent Desires and Return to Reason: The Personality Structure of Tomáš in The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Abstract


This paper uses the personality structure theory of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory as an analytical tool to explore the personality cause and tragic fate of Tomaš, the hero. This study consists of five parts. The former four parts focus on the concrete expressions of "ID", "Ego" and "Superego" in Tomaš’s character, and the last part focuses on the tragic fate pulled by Tomaš'"ID" and "Ego" and the contradictory meaning of the tragedy.
