Research on the Effect of Input Modes and Vocabulary Level on the English Majors’ Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition

Abstract


This research probes into the effect of input modes and learners’ English vocabulary levels on incidental vocabulary acquisition (IVA) with English major sophomores in West Anhui University as subjects based on Depth-of-Processing Hypothesis and Task-induced Involvement Load Hypothesis. The results indicate that the main effect of input modes is significant on IVA. Moreover, the English vocabulary level influences the effect. Students with higher vocabulary level can pay more attention to acquire more unfamiliar words than those with lower level. Furthermore, as to the two main factors, namely, vocabulary levels and input modes, there is no significant interactive influence of them on IVA.
