Perceptions and Practices of Translanguaging in Chinese University EFL Classrooms

Abstract


This study investigates teachers’ perceptions of the use of L1 in EFL classrooms and examines how teachers apply translanguaging in the classrooms. Research on translanguaging as pedagogy has increased in recent years in diff erent countries;however, there is limited studies on EFL teachers’ perceptions and practices of translanguaging in China, especia lly at university level. Thus, this study highlights the need to explore this area by adopting mixed methods research. Findings revealed that nearly half of participants held a positive attitude towards L1 but there was a compromise between their perceptions and practices.
