Study on Man and Superman from the Perspective of Symbolism

Qingyuan Tao

Abstract

Man and Superman: A Comedy and A Philosophy is a four-act drama published by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw in 1903. It on the surface level tells the love story between the revolutionary youth John Tanner and Ann Whitefield, while on the deep level expresses Shaw’s philosophical thoughts. Based on Mauclair’s symbolist theory, this thesis analyzes Man and Superman from the perspective of symbolism. The analysis of Man and Superman from the perspective of symbolism can providea different point of view of studying Shaw’s plays.
