Profi ling Vocabulary in Finance Textbooks: A Corpus-assisted Study

Abstract


Due to the lack of a suffi cient vocabulary, it is of great challenge for learners to comprehend fi nance textbooks in English. However, existing research on special academic vocabulary has not given much attention to a fi nance vocabulary for Chinese learners. Thus, this study aims to establish a fi nance vocabulary list (FVL) by addressing the following two questions are addressed in this study: 1) how many word families should be added to the FVL to ensure 95% text coverage (Laufer, 1989) in the corpus?2) what are the members of the FVL? A self-built corpus of fi nance textbooks (FTC) was used to generate a list of candidate words and the fi nal FVL with 1188 families (8141 words) was determined by excluding proper nouns through corpus-assisted methods.
