Translation of Cultural Site Names on the Jianmen Shu Road: A Study of English Translations of Three Kingdoms Cultural Sites

Li Xu, Lina Song, Meixia Zheng

Abstract

The names of many cultural sites from the Three Kingdoms period along the Jianmen Shu Road are imbued with humanistic, historical, and other cultural factors. Translators of these site names should fully consider their characteristics and functions to accurately translate the cultural factors and convey the historical and cultural signifi cance of the sites. Due to the cultural diff erences between Chinese and English, translators need to understand the historical and cultural connotations of the original Chinese names, while also considering the semantic, pragmatic, and cultural understanding of English-speaking readers. Currently, multiple names exist for the same site due to diff erent translator choices. To resolve this issue, the government and management of scenic spots should designate offi cial names.

Keywords

Jianmen Shu Road; Three Kingdoms cultural site; English translation
