Chao Ding

In recent years, English linguists have had deep discussions about ambiguity from every side of it. And here research fi ndings have been summed up in this thesis, with opinions on the English ambiguity especially on the ambiguous structures. First of all, this thesis expounds the importance and significance of the study of ambiguous structures on the basis of analyzing the connotation and classifi cation of ambiguity. After that the major factors of how the ambiguity comes into being are analyzed simply. Finally, taking the stages of the structures of phrases for instance, the thesis analyzes and generalizes the format of phrases, and in this way the preliminary exploration is put forward. The most important part of this thesis is the six procedures of disambiguation, also called the elimination of ambiguity. They are: immediate constituent analysis, changing the order of words, using other words, making up the omission, contextualization, changing the whole sentence.
